Dear Rena,

I would like to know if social media is just another promotional tool like advertsing, public relations etc?
Where does social media exactly fit in the promtion (marketing communication) mix of a company?

Awaiting your reply.

Thanks

Hi Rena! One of @bethharte & my passions is IMC, thus the reason for #IMCChat. Agreed! Social media has amplified the importance of integrated marketing communications efforts. I'm so glad companies are finally getting a clue on that, while others have been practicing IMC for years!

I think the reason IMC is getting more and more prevalent is because social media opens up all doors for everyone to interact with brands. If a brand doesn't have a unified message or is listening to its stakeholders, it will be known, and fast. And as you stated, once that happens, you can't control social media. So companies, let's get beyond that and talk to customers!
I like the examples you've used, and there are many more out there. Nice blog post!

Robin, Your right. Lots of people still don't get the idea that social is a 2-way communication method and use it as a broadcast medium. Thanks for the catch on the spelling error BTW! -Rena

Informative article, I've seen more companies starting to integrate Social Media with their traditional media outlets, while others doing it really wrong by using the Social Media Mediums as broadcast channels and being not responsive, while spamming the medium with sales and discounts.

Great article.

"Taditional marketing clarifies Social Media" Spelling error by the way.

Cheers,

Hi Nikki,
It's true that social media is encouraging marketers to take a fresh look at their overall strategy. Hopefully more firms will see the vast opportunities that SMM offers, beyond just blogging.
Thanks for your comments and your always welcome to reference this blog.

Rena, I'm a fan of all integrated marketing strategies, and believe that all communication is an opportunity to reinforce your company's brand and mission. Marketing should not stand alone or apart from business, but should be integrated into the fabric of the company at every level. I think social media is encouraging companies to strongly think about their marketing strategies in a new way.

I was very much inspired by your examples here. I've linked to this post and your company's site in a blog post (http://wp.me/pLIIL-F). Please let me know if you'd like me to reference you, this post, or Elektrik Ink differently or if you prefer to not be linked to.

Thanks!
